Interview Copilot guides
How do I prepare for a UX or product designer interview?
UX and product designer interviews center on the portfolio walkthrough, and they look at how you defined the problem and made decisions with evidence more than at the final screens. For each project, be ready to say the problem, your role, the options you weighed and the result in numbers, and prepare one story about disagreeing with an engineer or PM.
Walking through a portfolio
- Problem and users: whose problem it was and how you found out
- Your role: the part you owned on the team
- Process: research, the alternatives you considered, what you dropped and why
- Result: metrics or user response after launch, and what you'd change next time
Questions that come up most
- How did you know this design was right?
- A time you had to cut a design back for the engineering schedule
- One screen in our product you'd change, and why
- Building or maintaining a design system
Whiteboard and take-home exercises
Don't start drawing right away; ask about the users, the goal and the constraints first. Then sketch the overall flow, go deep on one screen, and close with how you'd measure success. Thinking out loud matters as much as what you draw.
Practicing with SpeechShield
Add your resume and the job posting to an interview context, with notes on each project as reference material. In a mock interview where you share your screen to walk through your portfolio, press ⌘K to send the current screen with the next answer and get talking points for follow-ups on that project.
Related questions
How many projects should I show?
Two or three you can explain in depth is enough for an interview. If time is short, start with the one you're most confident about.
What do I show without work experience?
Pick a real product, define a problem in it and bring your redesign. If you did any user interviews or usability tests, show those too.
