Interview Copilot guides
How do I prepare for a data analyst or data scientist interview?
Data analyst and data scientist interviews come as technical questions like SQL and statistics, problem solving on metrics and experiment design, and a walkthrough of analyses you've done. They often ask which decision your analysis changed rather than what it found, so have the business result of each project ready in numbers.
What each part looks for
- SQL and coding: whether you build the table you need with joins, aggregates and window functions. In live rounds, whether you explain the query as you go.
- Statistics: hypothesis tests, confidence intervals, sample size, telling correlation from causation
- Metrics and experiments: how you'd define success for a new feature, design an A/B test and read the result
- Machine learning (data scientists): why you chose a model, evaluation metrics, how you handled overfitting and leakage
- Projects: the problem, the data, the method, the result and the decision it changed
How to prepare
- Solve a few SQL problems every day, then explain each query out loud.
- Practice explaining common statistics concepts in one sentence. Interviewers ask when to use them more than how they're defined.
- Pick the key metric for the company's product, and decide what you'd check first if it suddenly dropped.
- For each project, prepare what you'd change next time and what you did when the data fell short.

Related questions
How do analyst and data scientist interviews differ?
Analyst interviews weigh SQL, metrics, experiments and business interpretation; data scientist interviews add deeper statistics and machine learning. Titles vary by company, so prepare from the duties in the job posting.
What if I can't share results from company data?
Give ratios instead of exact numbers, like a percentage improvement, and explain the method and the decision in detail.
